Fix incoming for MetaMask bug that’s slowly killing solid-state drives

Consensys to Release Fix for MetaMask Bug
Consensys, the blockchain firm behind the popular MetaMask browser extension, has announced that it will be releasing a fix for a bug that has been causing excessive disk activity on users' solid-state drives (SSDs). This bug has been reported to be potentially shortening the lifespan of SSDs due to the continuous writing of data by the MetaMask extension.
Reports of Abnormal Disk Writing
Users, including ripper31337 and Quanquan, have reported abnormal disk writing on their SSDs after installing the MetaMask extension on Chromium-based browsers. The bug was found to be writing data at a rate of five megabytes per second, resulting in 500 gigabytes of data written daily and 25 terabytes in just three months. This intense usage of SSDs can significantly reduce their lifespan, which typically lasts five to ten years under normal conditions.
Consensys Working on a Solution
In response to the reports, a Consensys spokesperson stated that the company is actively investigating the issue and will be releasing a fix for the bug soon. They acknowledged the unusually high disk activity experienced by some MetaMask users and mentioned that strategies are being explored to reduce state size and optimize data fetching. Users have expressed concern over the impact of the bug on their SSDs and are eagerly awaiting the release of the fix to address the issue.
